The current bridge over the Leie in Menen is outdated and too low for modern inland vessels. That is why the construction of a new, higher bridge will start in 2026. At the same time, the bends in the river are made more slightly, so that larger ships can get through easier.

“For Menen this is much more than an infrastructure project. It also means the start of a large-scale urban renewal,” says Flemish MP Griet Vanryckeghem (N-VA). “The area around the Leie gets a greener, safer and more attractive interpretation. A win-win for both inland shipping and the inhabitants.”
