Yolande (64) and Renate (65) are now friends for more than half a century. They both have walking as a hobby and love nature. Together they wanted to take on an adventure in the Netherlands and ended up at the Pieterpad.

With a lot of energy and good courage, the two in 2017 will start the nearly 500 kilometer walking route from Pieterburen in Groningen to Sint-Pietersberg, Limburg. “We thought it would be great fun and it went well in the first instance,” says Yolande. “With our straw hats on and the sun in our back we slowly walked to Groningen.”

Setbacks

The ladies enjoy the tour and walk the route from north to southern Netherlands in stages. The girlfriends enjoy walking, but the fun is roughly disturbed when Renate’s husband dies unexpectedly at home. “One day she woke up next to her deceased husband. After that moment she needed a recovery time.”

Renate scribbles and together they make plans to continue the Pieterpad, but then it is Yolande who has to deal with enormous setbacks. “I got sick and the diagnosis was breast cancer.” The death of Renates husband and Yolande’s disease create a gap in their lives and in the ambition to go for a walk together.
