Small tennis sensation in Darmstadt! The 19-year-old German tennis talent Josy Daems surprisingly reached the final at the W35 tournament.

Already reaching the semi -final was a result for Josy Daems that protrudes from her previous vita. Hardly anyone expected that number 659 of the world rankings on Saturday, however, would also conquer Swedin Kajsa Rinaldo Persson (number 336 of the world rankings) without loss of sets.

In the 6: 1 and 7: 6, Daems even had a firm grip on her over long distances. She won the first round superior, in the second set Daem’s fighting spirit proved when she was able to compensate for the game twice after a break from Rinaldo Persson. In the tiebreak, the DTB hopeful wearer actually prevailed quite safely with 7: 3.

In the final, however, the hurdle hardly gets smaller. On Sunday, the Monegasin Francesca Curmi (number 369 of the world rankings), which was placed in three, was waiting for the tournament favorite SO-HYUN Park (number 307 of the world rankings) from South Korea with 7: 6 and 6: 1 in her semi-finals.

French Open winner missed sensation

Overall, from a German perspective, the event in Darmstadt was rather sobering despite the strong performance of Daems.

Eleven DTB players were in the main field, seven failed at the start. After all, with Daems, the young Eva Bennemann and Marie Vogt, a trio reached the round of the last eight.

Meanwhile, Niels McDonald missed a surprise in the qualification for the ATP tournament in Umag. The 17-year-old German, who was able to win the French Open junior competition in the German final against Max Schönhaus in 2025, lost against the Frenchman Titouan Droguet (number 174 in the world rankings), showed good approaches in 4: 6 and 3: 6.
