France seemed to be on roses early in the game. The German defender Kathrin Hendrich was tempted after more than ten minutes of playing to pull the French Griedge Mbock on her hair. The Swedish referee Tess Olofsson had escaped it in the first instance, but the video referee was not.

Olofsson was called to the screen and soon saw enough: penalty for France and a red card for Hendrich. Grace Geyoro did not go into the ball too well, but France took the lead after fifteen minutes of play.

With an early lead and a male more there was little going on, but through Sjoeke Nüsken Germany still came alongside within half an hour. The striker headed a corner between four French players past Pauline Peyraud-Magnin in the far corner.

The match could have been completely upside down twenty minutes before the end, if Nüsken had shot the penalty that Germany received. However, the German number 9 saw her effort turned by Peyraud-Magnin.

In the necessary extension was not scored, so Germany achieved what it wanted after twelve minutes of play: the penalty shootout series. Ann-Katrin Berger became the hero of German women, by turning the penalty kick of Alice Sombath.
