On Saturday, the European Athletics Championships under the age of 23 were seen on Saturday, when Finnish was the Finnish athletics. Ilona Mononen grabbed a gold medal in 3,000 meters of obstacles and Antti Sainio ran a new Finnish record in the 400 meters.

Mononen took the victory with a mature performance as he beat Spanish Marta Serranon in the final stages. The winning time of 9.30.49 brought Finland the first gold of the race.

– Tactically fine and ripe running in every way, says Iltalehti’s athletics expert Arto Bryggare.

– He showed that he was a very intelligent endurance runner. This was a great milestone in the Finnish endurance run.

Bryggare finds Mononen’s performance, especially at European level, but he says that there is still a way to the top of the world.

– The world’s top is in a class of its own. But he is young and if he stays healthy, the world is open.

Mononen’s competition intelligence receives a special mention from Bryggare, although there are still areas for improvement.

– However, there is much room for improvement in every respect, as in the final and at speed. Competition intelligence is a great class, but of course physics needs to be developed over the years. I don’t want to say any boundaries. There is a long way to the top of the world, but Europe is already close to it [kärkeä].

In a 400 -meter barn run Antti Sainio I improved the Finnish record by 48.61, but in the tough finals it was enough instead of fourth.

The race was won by German Owe fischer-Breiholz At 48.01. The top level of the competition was exceptionally high, as the entire top four broke the record for the previous championship.

Byrggare was happy about Sainio’s run.

– Fierce improvement. He has certainly achieved his schedule. Of course, the investment will certainly be annoying, but it is not worth conveying it, Bryggare says.

– His goal is outside the youth competition.

Bryggare also highlights the extraordinary physical starting points for 20-year-old Sainio, as Sainio is 172 centimeters long. Bryggare compared him to two meters Alison dos Santoswho says he has quite different physical conditions.

– There are restrictions in physics, but it has a mentally really hard athlete. He is really young and has a huge spiritual potential.

– I hope that when he has such a tough attitude that he doesn’t run under his legs. The season will certainly be focused on spring, and that means that if you can’t practice the right way, it will be difficult since summer, and especially late autumn, says Bryggare.
