That decision was taken by the Mayor and Aldermen, in consultation with the Security Region. Due to the persistent drought, the risk of natural fire has increased considerably.
“Lucifers, ashes, cigarettes and other smoking patterns can quickly lead to fires in a dry environment,” warns Mayor Ben Tap. “And with drought a fire quickly gets bigger.”
‘Move the rules’
With the prohibition, the municipality wants to prevent a fire breaking out in nature in the coming weeks. The mayor therefore makes a call to everyone who comes in or around the area: be careful and stick to the rules.
Last month another one broke Dune fire out in Bergen aan Zee. Emergency services pulled out en masse and the smoke could be seen from a great distance. Whether that fire was created by a cigarette is unknown.
