Under the title “Virgil Abloh: The Codes”, the first major European exhibition in honor of Virgil Abloh (1980–2021) will take place from September 30 to October 10, 2025. The opening day symbolically falls on Abloh’s birthday.
The exhibition illuminates around two decades of multidisciplinary work by the designer, artist and cultural visionary. More than 20,000 archives are presented, including hundreds of objects, prototypes, sketches and photographs from his career as well as from personal collections and his private library.
A central element of the exhibition is Abloh’s collaboration with artists: inside, designer: inside and athletes: Inside – an aspect that underlines his interdisciplinary way of working and his collaborative ethos.
“This exhibition is only the beginning of our work to share Virgil’s legacy and its principles with the creative community and all over the world,” explains Shannon Abloh, wife of the deceased, managing director of Virgil Abloh Securities, founder and CEO of Virgil Abloh Foundation and President of the Virgil Abloh Archive.
The presentation of his personal collection, unfinished projects and iconic works is a monumental opportunity to honor his life’s work. Abloh’s goal of making knowledge openly accessible and unusable is continued in this way – “Virgil remains a source of inspiration beyond the archive and a illumination of creative knowledge.”
The exhibition is curated by Chloé Sultan and Mahfuz Sultan. It is an expanded version of the exhibition of the same name from 2022. The focus is on how Abloh’s characteristic design principles – its “codes” – are drawn through all disciplines: fashion, shoes, architecture, music, advertising and more. They make it clear how Abloh developed a consistent practice that deliberately dissolved genre limits.
