The American Luminates half-year report 2025 is there-and delivers surprising data. Rock is back. According to the report, Rock is in second place in the most popular US genres, measured by on-demand audio streaming. With 123.3 billion streams, it is behind hip-hop and R&B with 171.1 billion. But that’s not all. Rock recorded the highest growth compared to the same period in 2024, followed by Latin, Country and Christian/Gospel. The soundtrack of “The Sinners”-and the associated activities of the artists involved-ensured an increase in the blues area.
“Becoming Led” Zeppelin dominates music documentation
At the same time, “Becoming Led Zeppelin” landed in 1st place of the most successful music documentation in 2025, with 329.8 million minutes. The documentary ensured an increase in the global on-demand streams from LED Zeppelin, with a highlight of 40.4 million a week on February 27th. Since then, the weekly average has been 39 million streams by July 3.
The authorized film, staged by Bernard Macmahon, focuses on the band’s early years. It is not a biography, but the film is similar to “A Complete Unknown”, “Bohemian Rhapsod” Y and “Elvis” by bringing the band – and the genre rock – a younger generation closer.
Vinyl, cassettes and the persistent influence of Classic Rock
Elsewhere in the Luminate report, Morgan Wallen’s “I’m the problem” leads the US top-10 albums, with 2.562 million album equivalents consumed. This is followed by “SOS” by Sza and “Gnx” by Kendrick Lamar. The latter is also at the top of the most popular US vinyl albums, with “Short N ‘Sweet” by Sabrina Carpenter in second place.
Classic rock albums also appeared in the vinyl and the cassette top list: “Rumors” from Fleetwood Mac reached 83,000 Vinyls sold, while “Bleach” from Nirvana recorded 4,000 cassettes sold. As Neil Young once said: Rock & Roll Can Never.
