Eindhoven Zoo has two new and special residents: At the beginning of this month, two Golden Takins were welcomed in the park. That is what Eindhoven says so on Thursday. This is the only place in the Netherlands where this endangered species can be seen.
Golden Takins are known for their sturdy construction, climbing skills and striking golden fur. An adult Takin male weighs around four hundred kilos. In terms of size, they are similar to an adult, female bison. They are mainly leaf eaters, but they also eat grass and bamboo shoots.
They have received a new and rocky stay of 2100 square meters in the zoo. That area has been renovated in recent months, so that it looks like their natural habitat in the high mountains of the Himalayas. The red panda, which comes from the same region, also gets a stay in this new area.

The two Takins actually come from a zoo in the Czech Republic and Pairi Daiza in Belgium. “We have lived here for months,” says Stephan Rijnen, head of animal care at Eindhoven Zoo. “It’s great to finally see the Takins in place. They have been able to get used to peace in the last few days, but it is all going well so far.”
