Extreme athlete Felix Baumgartner, according to media reports from Italy, was fatal at the age of 56. Allegedly, Austrians, who became famous with a jump from space, killed in a paragliding accident in the coastal town of Porto Sant’elpidio.

As the Italian newspaper La Repubblica reports, Baumgartner had entered the air with a motorized parag leader. But during the flight he apparently suffered a medical emergency, possibly a sudden weakness or circulatory collapse. He lost control of his aircraft and fell into the swimming pool of a coastal accommodation.

He is said to have met a woman in the impact. She suffered minor injuries, but does not hovers in mortal danger.

Baumgartner made a jump in space famous

Baumgartner himself lost consciousness immediately after the impact and suffered a cardiac arrest. A requested rescue helicopter crew arrived quickly, but could not do anything. His heart stopped beating before he could be taken to the hospital.

A few hours before his death, Baumgartner posted a photo and “Too Much Wind” (in German: too much wind.) In his Instagram Stories, he showed together with his family the day before. Nobody suspected that it would be his last flight.

Felix Baumgartner became world famous in 2012 when he plunged down at the Red Bull Stratos mission from almost 39 kilometers-as the first person in history who broke through the sound barrier in free fall.

Born in Salzburg, he was an icon of base jumping, wingsuiting and parachute sports for many years. In recent years it has become quieter around him. He last lived in Arbon in Switzerland.
