Niko Kovač stabilized Borussia Dortmund last season after his takeover. Now it should continue in the long term.

Borussia Dortmund would like to extend the contract of coach Niko Kovač in the long term. The “picture” reports. Accordingly, there are two options on how things could go between BVB and the Croatian trainer. The coach currently has a contract until summer 2026.

The BVB bosses agree that Kovač is the right coach for a successful season-and also beyond. In autumn, sports managing director Lars, sports director Sebastian Kehl and Kovač want to sit down to talk about further cooperation.

In the first variant, the trainer would extend his contract by 2028. However, there would be a clause according to which the contract can be dissolved for reduced conditions if the success is not. In the second option, Kovač would initially extend it for another year until 2027 – but the contract would automatically apply to a further season if successful.

The Croatian has been on the BVB trainer bank since the beginning of February, taking over the job from its predecessor Nuri Şahin. In the five months to the end of the season, he took Borussia to fourth place in the Bundesliga and thus achieved the qualification for the Champions League. In addition, the BVB only left the club World Cup in the quarter-finals against Real Madrid (2: 3).
