Drenthe is doing well as a holiday destination. A report from Marketing Drenthe shows that tourists find the province en masse this summer. The occupation is around seventy percent and is therefore higher than last year.

According to Miranda Horstman from Marketing Drenthe, the strong preseason is an important reason for success. “Entrepreneurs were already very satisfied with that. If spring is good and the weather is going, you will see that in the bookings for the summer.”

The changeable weather in other parts of Europe also plays a role. “People still look at where it is extreme think of floods or forest fires and then prefer a holiday close to home.”

Most bookings are for campsites and bungalow parks. “They attract many guests and are even a little fuller than last year,” said Horstman. She also sees an increase in last-minute bookings: “Of course there is a group that books ahead, but you also see that people wait more often.”

About eighty percent of tourists come from their own country, but German tourists mainly come to Drenthe. “They stay closer to home and Drenthe is an attractive destination just outside the border.”

Attractors such as Wildlands, the pleasant villages, museums such as the hunebed center and the prison museum remain popular. “Tourists mainly come for nature, but also for cycling, walking and going out for dinner. There is plenty to experience here.”
