The German national team gambled away the group victory at the Women’s European Championship. This has direct consequences for the knockout round. There is now threatened with the opponent, who actually wanted to avoid.

With the 1: 4 defeat in the final preliminary round against Sweden, the German national team had to accept a sensitive setback on their title mission at the European Women’s European Championship in Switzerland. The DFB selection gambled away the group victory-and this has a difficult consequences for the further course of the tournament.

It will now be much more difficult than that would have been the case with first place after the preliminary round. In the quarter-finals, the DFB team will now be second in Group C next Saturday for the winner of Group D with France, England and the Netherlands-all top nations. France has been part of the expanded favorite group at big tournaments for years, the English women are the reigning European champions, the Netherlands won the title in 2017.

“We will analyze the opponent well. We will prepare for it and we will bring our strengths on the pitch,” said national coach Christian Wück about the upcoming task.

But the further path in the tournament has already been determined. And it now has it for the German team: In a possible semi -finals you would meet the winner of the quarter -final game between world champion Spain with host Switzerland. So it is quite possible that the DFB team will meet the top favorite for the tournament victory. The Spaniards scored a whopping eleven goals in their first two games. For comparison: Germany is with five goals after three games.

In the other half of the tournament tree, Norway and Italy meet. Sweden will meet the second -placed from Group D in the quarter -finals, whose winners now get the German eleven to do. All four teams of this tournament branch could then only wait as an opponent in the possible final for the DFB selection. The way there is now a tough one – the hardest that was possible. With a win against Sweden and the group victory, the DFB team could have avoided this scenario.
