At the age of 25, Remco Evenepoel shows what he can do at the Tour de France. Now there are rumors about the Belgian again.
There is no question that it is one of the best cyclists in the world. After all, Remco Evenepoel (Soudal Quick-Step) is a double Olympic champion (individual time trial and street races) and is currently again proving what he can do at the Tour de France. The 25-year-old Belgian also won the time trial at the cycling highlight and is currently in third place behind Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck) and Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) in the overall classification. He is at the moment better than Jonas Vingegaard (Team Visma-Lease A Bike), who had been favored for victory). Now there are initial speculations about Evenepoel.
With his achievements, he is said to be again in the field of view of Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe. Rumors about changing from Evenepoel to the German team persist. Maximilian Schachmann, team-mate of the Belgian, told the German press agency: “We are on the tour. The Remco rumors are already on the agenda. I have no idea what’s there.”
A possible transfer has been speculated for over a year. This time, however, such a step could actually be concretized. The Treaty of Red Bull captain Primož Roglič expires, the Slovenian is now 35 years old. Even Evenepoel is still bound to Soudal-Quick Step until 2026, but according to Belgian media reports, he has already deposited his desire to change.
Another point: Both teams use specialized bikes-a possible change would therefore not require a major technical change. Meanwhile, the Red Bull team is cautious. Sports director Rolf Aldag said: “I’m always surprised and amused. Above all, I would be surprised if some statement would make.”
Access like Evenepoel would be sporty. In the current season, the team remained behind the expectations. The spring classics did not bring any successes, only Nico Denz won a stage at Giro d’Italia – after Roglič had to give up after several falls.
In view of an estimated annual budget of 45 million euros, Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe plays financially at eye level with the top teams of the scene. The services this year should therefore cause dissatisfaction with the main sponsor from Austria. A transfer from Evenepoel could be a signal for a sporty fresh start.
