The new lacquer and raspberry maps in the harvest season promise to make more and more berry berries available.

There are about 100 different mire types in Finland, of which only about eight marshes are used to stop abundant. The application interprets and predicts areas where existing spatial data is most likely to grow lacquer or raspberry.

The lacquer map reveals lacquer spaces surprisingly south. The varnishes require a certain type of mire that is less in southern Finland, but the application has also found likely lacquer spaces inside Ring Road 3.

-You do not have to go far from home to raspberries, but you can find them along the jogging path or on the edges of the sports fields. Evening walks can be conveniently available for frozen morning porridge, tips the founder and CEO of the harvest calendar Samuli Karjula.

July is a good time for both raspberries and strikes, as the lacquer season is from mid -July to August and the raspberry season lasts from July to September.

A small part is picked up

About half of Finns go berry every year, but for many, berry berries seem difficult. It is estimated that only 3-10 % of the berries are picked from Finnish forests and marshes each year.

– At the heart of the harvest calendar has always been a mission to develop Finnish cuisine by increasing understanding of vegetable seasonal, diversifying their use, and making use of berry and fungal harvesting more easily. The app brings berries and mushrooms equally to everyone to reach and lowers the threshold to go into the woods when the map shows where to find berries and mushrooms, Karjula says.

Berry berries bring many benefits: collecting wild berries is free and has a lot of useful vitamins. Karjula reminds us that going to the woods and marshes is in itself relaxing.

Forecasts and research

Lacquer and Raspberry Maps were brought to the application biologist Jaakko Junika as a result of work. In the background, not only research and forecasting, but also field visits and expert surveys.

– Last year, we published blueberry and lingonberry maps, where there was a ready-made research template where forecasts began to be built. This year, forecasts are still being improved. For lacquer and raspberry, we started from zero. Preliminary reviews for blueberry and lingonberry showed that the proportion of the application’s predictions is reasonably accurate, says Junikka.

The harvest season app communicates with map applications usually on the phone, such as Google Maps. This makes it easy to find the route to the berry sites. The app has a more easy -to -read map and an accurate terrain map.

– We are constantly developing the application based on demand and feedback. Let’s see if we could get new mushrooms on the map for the fall, Karjula reveals.

Iltalehti also previously told about an application called Map Browser, which will make it easier to find blueberry and lingonberries.
