The climate is warming up and that has direct consequences for the chance of devastating forest fires in Europe, such as in southern France. Research shows that certain European areas up to ten times more likely to have catastrophic ‘megabranden’ at a moderate temperature rise. And the danger is not limited to the Mediterranean. “Even with us in the Benelux, the risk increases by 10 percent towards the end of the century,” says climatologist Lander van Tricht.
