Grigor Dimitrov had the number one in the world under control for two sentences – but then a muscle injury at 6: 3, 7: 5, 2: 2 provided for his end. With a lot of luck, Jannik Sinner survives the round of 16, it was the inglorious end of an evening that revealed Dimitrov’s great qualities, but ended in a tragedy.
“He is an incredible player, everyone saw it today. He is a good friend of mine and he had a good chance of reaching the next round. It doesn’t feel like a victory”said Sinner, who will meet Ben Shelton in the quarterfinals. “This is a tragic moment, a very hard and sader. I only wish him the best.”
Dimitrov injured himself on the right pectoral muscle in a half-volley. Then he brought his service to 2-2 in the third set, but then prevailed on the floor. Sinner immediately ran to the other side and asked about his opponent, two physiotherapists hurried. Dimitrov briefly went into the cabin with the doctors, but came out again and informed Sinner.
Tears and Sinner showed Sportsgeist, he helped Dimitrov to ship his bags towards the catacombs, then only came back on the court for an interview. As a consolation, the Bulgarian -thundering applause received the audience. But that will only help him to a limited extent. It was the fifth time in a row that Dimitrov had to give up injured in a Grand Slam.
Dimitrov ensures Sinner’s first surcharge and set of sets
A game very surprising in the course had preceded this tragic degree. Sinner had set a record in the first three rounds, but then there was a risk of a record without becoming worth becoming worth. Nobody managed to move into the round of 16 in the history of the Open ERA (since 1968) with less than his 17 lost service. The whole truth also included that the opponents with Luca Nardi, Aleksandar Vukic and Pedro Martinez Portero are far from the top of the world, but the previous achievements were still impressed.
Dimitrov was the first professional to show the strong early form of the first week of tournament as the number 19 players. The Bulgarian is a player with finesse, a good slice, strong serve and surprising ideas – on good days one who (especially on lawn) can beat every player, including Sinner. And Dimitrov started strongly, he immediately won his first service game despite 0: 30 deficit and breaks the number one in the world to 2-0.
Grigor Dimitrov showed the many facets of his tennis game against Sinner.
For Sinner it was a premiere in Wimbledon this year, so far he had survived all his own service games. At 0: 3, the Italian won the first game, but he had the problem that his opponent continued to act outstandingly. Dimitrov brought his service in an impressive manner, the last one even 0 – and so he deservedly won the first set with 6: 3.
Dimitrov gets 12 points in a row
In the first round, Dimitrov had won nine points more than his opponent. He won 20 out of 21 ball changes when his first serve came. He was 85 percent successful on the net and he beat significantly more Winner than Sinner (15: 9). The dominator of the first week showed that he would be that day “A-game” has to bring to the court.
Jannik Sinner did not find the perfect swing against Dimitrov.
However, Sinner did not find his best game, a double error brought Dimitrov in the first game of the second set again three break balls, followed by a simple forehand error and thus the break. It slowly came up with the impression that the surprise was increasingly mutating into a realistic scenario – especially since Dimitrov not only benefited from mistakes from the opponent, but also dominated a lot of rallies. With his third zero-game gain in a row, he also placed 2-0.
Sinner struggled with him and went into dialogue with his box – something that you can see extremely rarely from the Italian, otherwise in the pitch. It should have been dissatisfaction with the career of the game, but maybe also a physical problem? After Dimitrov’s game gain to 3: 1, Sinner at least signaled that he needed the help of a physiotherapist to change the sides.
In addition to Dimitrov, Sinner is a problem of the elbows
The 23-year-old fulfilled his obligation to serve and had the elbow checked in his right arm. In the first game, Sinner had slipped at 40:40 and fell on these, which apparently had consequences. Sinner took a medical time out and swallowed painkillers, after a short but obviously painful treatment, he then continued.
Jannik Sinner had to be treated on the elbow in the meantime.
Dimitrov sent the sign directly with an ASA that his rhythm had not suffered during the short break, he confidently held his lead with another zero game win. At that moment, 51:36 points accompanied the surprising one -sidedness of the game – but that changed. Sinner served confidently and came to a break chance at the 4: 5 booth: he used it, screamed out the cheers and clenched the fist towards the audience.
In fact, Dimitrov had the right answer again, he immediately took the serve off again and was allowed to open the second set again. And in this case, the Wimbledon semi-finalist from 2014 did not miss this opportunity despite some wobbles, there was only one sentence for the next surprise in this tournament full of surprises.
Sinner gets the chance Wimbledon triumph gifted
A break followed because the roof over the Center Court was closed, after which the two had to play again. An advantage for Sinner? At least for the first time, the first impact game of a sentence brought the finish line. Dimitrov also stayed in the game, also kept his service up to the stand of 2-2 – and then the game ended in a tragic way even for a siner.
The Italian has the opportunity to win his fourth triumph at a Grand Slam tournament after two titles in Australia and one at the US Open. This requires an increase in performance, because Sinner will probably not have that luck.
