Last year, Ciara Mageean EM-Gold secured over 1,500 meters. Now she has to cope with a heavy setback.
The Irish medium -range runner Ciara Mageean has made a cancer diagnosis public. The 33-year-old, who became over 1,500 meters in Rome, announced her illness on Friday on Instagram.
“To everyone who has accompanied me on my way so far, I have to deliver difficult news: I was diagnosed with cancer,” wrote Mageean. She did not give any further details.
The Irishman said that she had already started treatment and wanted to concentrate fully on her recovery. There is a lot to cope with, says Mageean. “Thank you for your love and your strength. I am ready to face it with the same struggle that I always got on the track,” she announced.
The news triggered great sympathy in the athletics scene. Gesa Krause, two -time European champion from Germany over 3,000 meters of obstacle, wrote under the post: “I’m so sorry to hear that. I love you love and a lot of strength.” The Dutch world champion and Olympic champion Femke Bol also expressed her recovery wishes on social media.
Mageean had been in the limelight in Amsterdam with European Championship bronze for the first time in 2016. In 2022 she won over 1,500 meters of silver in Munich. In 2024 she secured gold at the European Championship in Rome.
