A serious accident occurred on Sunday (July 6th) at the Deutsche Bahnrad Championships in Dudenhofen.

There was a serious accident on the last day of the German championship in rail cycling in Dudenhofen in Palatinate. At a speed of about 60 kilometers per hour, two drivers plunged into the auditorium at the semi-finals of the Keirin elite racing. While the two drivers got off lightly with abrasions and bruises, several spectators were seriously injured.

Driving error as the cause of the crash

Patrick Moster, the sports director at the federal government of German cyclists, explained in an interview with SWR Sport how the accident came about. In the case of a scramble around positions 4, 5 and 6, it happened. “It was a relatively high pace where you have to control the wheel very well. Then there was a driving error and subsequently to this fall,” said Moster.

A total of twelve affected people

“A cyclist flew beyond the guardrail and several spectators were affected,” said Thomas Hauser, organizational director of the Rescue Service Vorderpfalz.

“There are a total of twelve affected people, with the cyclists themselves. Two serious injuries were transported with the helicopters to surrounding clinics. Another eight injuries who were in the audience area were brought into surrounding hospitals with abrasions and cuts,” said Hauser.

“The Event dropout Was without an alternative “

After the crash, the event was canceled prematurely. “The health of athletes, spectators always proceeds. The abortion was therefore without alternative,” said Oliver Streich, Vice President at German Cycling for Marketing and Communication.

“I am shocked by the accident. We experienced a cycling festival here in Dudenhofen for five days. Of course, nobody wanted an end to the event,” said Jens Hartwig, chairman of RV Dudenhofen 1908.
