The record served after a marathon more than 5 hours long and some interruptions for rain, when Lorenzo Sonego beats Brandon Nakashima at the tie-break of the fifth set and becomes the third Italian in the round of 16 of Wimbledon. Flavio Cobolli and Jannik Sinner reaches, ahead with much easier victories than hers, and makes the history of this Italian tennis in a state of grace, which never before he had placed three athletes in the fourth round of the London Slam on the grass. It is the umpteenth sign of how much Italy under the net has exploded, reaching peaks never touched before.

RECORD

Sinner, Cobolli and Sonego become the first trio among the best 16 of Wimbledon. It had already been history, with the 5 qualified in the third round (Mattia Bellucci and Luciano Darderi lost on the street), but this new result never seen before makes the blue tennis still rise. Italy had already placed 6 times three players in the round of 16 of the men’s tournament, but had only happened at Roland Garros and the last time in 2021 after a wait of 59 years. Wimbledon, where no blue has ever won and Matteo Berrettini remains the only one to have arrived in the final, is an unpublished. But this new record is also the confirmation of how much blue tennis has risen, given that for the third year in a row there are at least two Italians in the roundabouts of Wimbledon (Berrettini and Sinner in 2023, Musetti and Sinner last year).

And now …

The blues are all on the same part of the scoreboard. Sinner obviously is the one who enchants most, the favorite with Alcaraz for the title: in the round of 16 he will see it with the Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov, series head number 19 that the number of the world has beaten in 4 of the previous 5 in his career, the last at Roland Garros last year. The prize for Sonego, virtually number 40 in the world after the marathon with Nakashima, is a Rendez Vous with the American Ben Shelton, number 10 of the 3-1 table forward with him in the direct clashes: the 30-year-old from Turin will try to overturn the prediction to reach the quarterfinals as at the Australian Open and to give himself a derby with Sinner in what would become his best Wimbledon. Cobolli is already experiencing his best career Wimbledon after the dominant three sets on the Czech Mensik: for him in the round of 16 there is the Croatian Marin Cilic, who has beaten twice in two in his career included in the first round of Roland Garros this year. Italy of male tennis dreams of another record.
