Shortly before the European Championship, Sara Däbritz set a private milestone. The midfielder starts a big tournament for the first time as a married woman.

When the German national team starts the European Championship in Switzerland on July 4th against Poland, a player has more experience than everyone else in the squad: Sara Däbritz. The 30-year-old stands before her ninth big tournament-for the first time with wedding ring on the finger. “Except for training, I put it off” as she explained at a DFB press conference in Herzogenaurach, the ring comes into a box, “so that it is not lost”.

Born in Amberger, she recently said yes to her longtime partner Lukas Dotzler. The 29-year-old has accepted her name and is now called Lukas Däbritz. In the European Championship preparation, the moment of happiness became the companion of everyday sporting life. “Of course it was nice to have such a personal highlight in front of the European Championship. I think personal happiness is very important for sporting success,” said Däbritz.

During the tournament, her husband, who is active in the higher -class amateur football at DJK Vilzing in the regional league, wants to support you in the stadium. Especially when playing the DFB women in the preliminary round, he should be on site-an important support for Däbritz: “If you have and can see your heart in the stands”, it is always something special.

The midfielder experienced her international breakthrough in 2013 at the European Championship in Sweden. At that time she was nominated at the age of 18 and described herself as a “chick”. In retrospect, the team spirit from back then was the decisive factor for winning the title.

Today Däbritz perceives similar dynamics in the current squad: “What I now feel is that something very special is created in the team,” she said. In the training camp, the focus is noticeably high for everyone. “If we continue with the setting, there is really a lot possible with the euro.”

Despite her routine – 108 caps are booked – Däbritz will probably not take a regular role this year. She encounters this development calmly: “No matter what my role will look like, I will fill it up 100 percent,” she clarified. Participation in a big tournament still means a lot to her: “Even if it is my fourth European Championship, it is still the greatest thing for me to play for the national team and to represent our country.”

In addition to EM titles and World Cup participation, Olympics are also part of the career balance of the midfielder. In 2016 in Rio she won bronze with the German team gold, at the games 2024. Her club is also faced with a change: Däbritz leaves Olympique Lyon in summer and follows Real Madrid.
