Dortmund’s opponent in the round of 16 of the club World Cup, CF Monterrey, has some known faces to offer. A prominent protrudes: Sergio Ramos.
Borussia Dortmund In the round of 16 of the club World Cup not only meets Mexico’s best team, CF Monterrey – it also meets a man who has won pretty much everything there is to win in world football: Sergio Ramos. The now 39-year-old ends his outstanding career in Mexico and still makes a good impression at the club World Cup as a defense chief.
Kehl: “It is uncomfortable against Ramos”
His successes are huge: Ramos won the Champions League four times with Real Madrid, five times he became Spanish champion. He has become two -time European champion with Spain and world champion. Ramos is still Spain’s record player with 180 missions in the national team. In addition, there are two French championship titles in Paris in his years. The list does not appear to be complete and yet it becomes clear – Ramos is success and experience pure.
BVB’s interior defenders Waldemar Anton also knows that: “An incredible mentality and leader.” He has already admired Ramos as a child. Sports director Sebastian Kehl said: “Sometimes it is uncomfortable. I have experienced it a few times. He will of course lead this team a bit with its winning mentality. But we are prepared for that.”
Young talents mixed with experience
Ramos, who scored the lead in the first group game against Inter Milan, protrudes from a team that has a good mix of experienced professionals and young South and Central American talents. For example, there would be a center forward Germán Berterame, at least double scorer in the 4-0 against Urawa and second best scorer Monterreys in the past season. Or the young talent Victor Guzmán and Fidel Ambríz, whose market values are already valued at over 5 million euros.
In addition to Ramos, there are other prominent Spanish names in the squad: Sergio Canales, 34 years old, who leads the team offensive, became Spanish cup winner twice and comes to almost 400 competitive games in Spanines La League. Or Lucas Ocampos, who won the Europa League twice with FC Sevilla. It was not for nothing that Kehl emphasized: “We have to really stretch for the progress. Monterrey is not just Ramos.” So far, the Mexicans have only conceded one goal in the entire tournament.
Cooler stadium, more atmosphere?
After all: the external conditions will be significantly better than before. Dortmund most recently played in Cincinnati at almost 40 degrees against Ulsan – the players were clearly noticeable, especially in half -time. Now the venue is called Atlanta. The stadium there is air -conditioned, so a little more pleasant temperatures are waiting.
And the mood is waiting: Atlanta is located in the south of the United States – that’s why many Monterrey fans from Mexico are expected. That motivates even more: “I would be happy if some World Cup mood finally comes across and the tournament picks up speed.” The BVB wants to be there on this trip.
