The cabinet is working on a public energy fund for the coming years. This fund will support households in a financially vulnerable position in paying the energy bill. A combination with more sustainability of homes is used, so that households themselves can get a better grip on their energy bills. The Public Energy Fund replaces the Temporary Emergency Fund Energie, with which the government has supported households together with the energy sector in the past three years.
Setting up the government fund requires a change in the law and careful preparation. It can therefore be opened at the end of next year at the earliest. The commitment is that vulnerable households can still receive financial support for 2026. There is 60 million euros available for the fund from the government. The cabinet has decided to supplement the fund with 174.5 million euros from the European ‘Social Climate Fund’ (SCF). This is subject to approval of the proposal by the European Commission. Part of the Dutch plan within the SCF is to give multi -year income aid to households with high energy costs, in combination with help with making homes more sustainable. The precise duration of the public energy fund is still being worked out.
Help through Temporary Emergency Fund Energie
The Temporary Emergency Fund Energie was open for the last time this spring for requesting households. Both the cabinet and the energy sector contributed financially to this emergency fund. This year it is expected to support 110,000 households with paying the energy bill. They receive an average of 80 euros per month in support. In the application, households could indicate whether they would like to receive additional help to lower their energy bills. They have responded en masse. In the coming period, we will look at what this help can look like.
