Sick people are good at manipulating you, it is difficult not to fall, especially sensitive ones like me. And I, a little masochist as I am, have fallen in full. Toxic history with a narcissist, depression, doctors, drugs, I was very much down. Writing I was a little saved.
How much does it take to conclude a novel?
I would like to put more, six months, but I can afford four, because then there are the drafts, the press, the presentations throughout Italy. Fortunately, I don’t know the blocking of the writer, I could also deliver two books a year, the flow of my emotions never stops.
He speaks of feelings, love, friendship, loneliness, themes of much narrative written by women. Don’t you feel an exception?
I have a very developed female side. I was an Oops child! In the sense that I arrived unexpectedly ten years after the last child. I lost the dad as a child, I grew up with mom, and this sensitivity, perhaps too much, scored me, for better or for worse. Sensitive men exist, but they tend to hide it. Talking about their fragility makes them seem weak. They are not used to handling emotions, they do not have the courage to break a relationship and they do ghosting, they refuse the idea of being left, and everything they have repressed explodes violently.
Are you sorry to be considered “too popular”?
I am happy to be what I am, I don’t care about the prizes, to win the witch, to write a “necessary” book. I think there is a little envy and distrust of authors and journalists who sell less, while I live with writing. All narrators should be recognized, the pop ones together with the “high” ones. But things will change. The yellows, until recently, were of series B, like love today. It is enough for me to tell life, and find new words to do it. A kiss is always a kiss, a “I love you” is always a “I love you”.
