Toni Kroos won numerous titles in his career. But even after the end of his career, he is awarded – not only for sporting reasons.

In a few weeks, Toni Kroos returns to where his impressive career started-after Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. On July 18, the former international in the Greifswald Volksstadion was awarded the country’s Order of Merit. The state government confirmed the appointment on Tuesday after the “Ostsee Zeitung” had previously reported.

Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig (SPD) emphasized that Kroos is “not only the most important footballer that our beautiful country has ever produced”. The 35-year-old captivates primarily through his social commitment. Among other things, his foundation supports the children’s and youth hospice service LEICHTTURM in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania as well as numerous other facilities and families across Germany.

Kroos comes from Greifswald. After the European Championship tournament in the summer of 2024, the six-time Champions League winner and world champion from 2014 ended his active career. He spent most of his career at Real Madrid. Previously, he also played in the Bundesliga for FC Bayern and Bayer 04 Leverkusen.
