The 21 municipalities that work together in the Metropolitan Region Eindhoven are strongly behind the plans where energy -friendly has to be generated. The municipalities have to make hard choices and therefore locations that have previously lost weight for sun or wind farms are again examined.
The backlog is mainly due to two developments that are outside the power of the municipalities. For example, many possible locations for windmills fall off because they are near Defense Air Bases. Another reason is a directive from the province, making it difficult to install solar parks on agricultural land. That is what Rik Thijs, chairman of the portfolio holders’ consultation of the Metropool Region Eindhoven.
Thijs says that the municipalities have set themselves the goal of generating about 2 Terrawatt of sustainable energy by 2030. The municipalities are now probably about 1.2 Terrawatt, but there is still play in what can still be achieved.
Due to the air bases and rules about solar parks, it is difficult for municipalities to find places where energy can be generated in a large -scale way. However, the municipalities are still working on projects on a smaller scale, such as stimulating solar panels on roofs. The municipalities also think about how energy can be saved.
New City Councils
In the run -up to the current plans for the energy transition, various locations have been lost due to, for example, a lack of support in the area or because the plans were not well put together for business. “We have to look carefully at what has been left before and see what can still be done now,” says Thijs.
After the municipal elections, in March 2026, a new energy strategy is being worked on. Then it becomes clear which locations are being held against the light again and where there may be large wind farms or solar parks.
