The HAAG (dpa-AfX)-US President Donald Trump received a very special welcome shortly before the start of the NATO summit in the Haag-and promptly published this personal message. After a screenshot of the news published by Trump, NATO general secretary Mark Rutte promised him a “further great success” in a personal text message. Literally, Rutte wrote: “It was not easy, but we all made them sign the 5 percent commitment! Donald, you have led us to a really, really important moment for America, Europe and the world. You will achieve something that no American president has achieved for decades.”

Rutte also alluded to the fact that already Barack Obama And Joe Biden had used the Europeans to invest a significantly higher part of their gross domestic product in defense, but only with limited success. Literally, Rutte also added “Europe is going to Pay in a Big Way, as They Should, and it will be your win.” This can be translated with: “Europe will be asked to pay vigorously – as it should be – and it will be your victory.”

At the beginning of his news, Rutte Trump praised his command for attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities. “Congratulations and thank you for your determined action in Iran,” wrote the Dutch. “It was really extraordinary and something that nobody else dared to do. It makes us all safer.”

In the alliance, Ruttes message was seen as an attempt to ensure success of this year’s NATO summit. In the past, Trump’s statements had sparked several doubts as to whether the United States was without restriction under its leadership. As early as his term from 2017 to 2021, the Republican repeatedly ran over the low -defense spending of European Allies and at times even threatened to exit the United States. Since the deterrent of NATO is largely based on the military skills of the United States, this would threaten their existence ./aha/dp/stw
