The cause of the train failure that currently makes trains to and from Schiphol Airport impossible “could be sabotage”. That is what outgoing Minister of Justice and Security David van Weel said on Tuesday morning in the Public forum at the NATO summit in The Hague. “[Sabotage] is one of the things we are investigating now, “Van Weel told Omroep NOS.” It could be an activist group. It could be a different state. It could be anything “”

From Utrecht and Amsterdam, no trains to and from Schiphol Airport are going through a power outage that has been caused by a fire in cables. No NS buses are deployed because the malfunction is too large and it is not possible to resolve that with replacement transport. NS advises to travel with alternative transport.

Due to the same malfunction, fewer intercity’s between Leiden and The Hague rode, but this was restarted around 9 a.m. Previously this was also the case from Rotterdam, The Hague and Leiden, but there the train traffic to the airport was restarted from 8.15 am, reports a spokesperson for NS.

ProRail reports that the power outage in the cables on the night from Monday to Tuesday around 3.45 am near Schiphol was created. The fire has since been extinguished, but there would be “significant damage” to around thirty cables. The cause of the fire is unknown and is being investigated.

Due to the NATO summit in The Hague there are various road closures between Amsterdam, The Hague and Rotterdam. That was already the case on Monday. Then the morning rush hour went a lot quieter than usual.
