Uwe Witt was a regular at Hertha for several years. Then a scandal ended his career. Now he has died.

Uwe Witt is dead. The former Bundesliga player and captain of Hertha BSC already died in the capital on May 22, according to the Berlin “Tagesspiegel”. Witt was 86 years old.

Defender Witt had completed a total of 158 competitive games (including 123 Bundesliga missions) for Hertha BSC between 1968 and 1972, scored two goals. Immediately in a first season, he made the promotion to the Bundesliga with the Berliners. Previously, the Brunsbüttel native was in the North Oberliga for many years, then in the Regionalliga Nord, including for FC St. Pauli (1961-63) and Holstein Kiel (1965-67).

The Bundesliga scandal in 1972 came to an early end. At that time, the Hertha surprisingly lost 0-1 against Arminia Bielefeld, which was still able to stay in the league. It later came out that the Bielefeld had offered money to Berlin. However, the Herthans always contested that they have deliberately lost.

In retrospect, some Hertha players still accepted money from Bielefeld, the story was public, 15 actors of Berlin and manager Wolfgang Holst took off. Witt, who always assured that he had not accepted any money himself, was fined with a two -year lock and 15,000 marks. However, the then 33-year-old refused to pay, so his lock was never lifted by the DFB-and his career was over. In later years, Witt worked in the real estate industry.
