“Unique for our nature, because this impressive sea bird normally only breeds in the far north,” responded Flemish Minister of Agriculture Jo Brouns (CD&V) on social media. “Thanks to a quiet breeding area and enough food, this year a seagull couple chose Flanders to do family expansion.”

“With us, these seagulls are known as a retirer and winter guest. That is why, especially in the fall and winter, perceptions are reported and much less in the summer,” said Eric Stienen of the Inbo on the website of the Flemish Institute.
