Suddenly adult
According to economist Bart Kamphuis of the NOS, on the day you turn eighteen “a lot in one fell swoop”. From that moment on, young people have to arrange their health insurance, request student finance and be responsible for their own money matters. But many young people are not ready for that yet. Reem, a sixteen -year -old who spoke Kamphuis, is already worried: “I work, but don’t earn that much.” She looks up to the financial responsibility that awaits her soon.
Education
Guest teacher Winston Rose teaches in schools about dealing with money. He sees every day how few young people know about financial risks. Together with experience expert Melvin, he tries to warn young people: “After Pay seems handy, but you forget to pay easily. That has often happened to me,” says Melvin. Nevertheless, financial information is not standard in the teaching package. Schools must register separately for this, which means that many young people miss these important lessons.
Cabinet sees no reason for increasing
Despite the worries, the cabinet sees nothing in increasing the financial majority to 21 years. It would be legally and practically too complicated. According to Kamphuis, that is a missed opportunity: “The brain is only fully developed at the age of 25. Young people simply cannot always properly estimate the risks.”
