The Isle of Man is a British crown possession that does not belong to the United Kingdom and also not to the British overseas areas. It has its own laws, its own police and its own currencies, although it depends, among other things, foreign policy and defense dependent on the United Kingdom.

No maximum speed outside built -up areas

Own driving licenses are issued on the Isle of Man and they cannot be lost outside built -up areas due to a too high speed. A maximum speed of 30 or 40 mph (48 or 64 km/h) applies within the built -up area, there is no limit beyond that.

Although you can drive as fast as you want, that does not mean that you cannot be tapped by the police. If you drive recklessly, you will just get a fine.

In which the Isle of Man distinguishes itself from Germany – which also has no speed limit on many pieces of the Autobahn – is the fact that there are no highways. That means that you have more than 60 kilometers of winding public roads with fast turns, height differences and perfect asphalt, but not a maximum speed.

Isle of man TT

The island is particularly known by motorcyclists. The Mountain Road is one-way traffic during the TT week in June. The road is then used as TT circuit And there is really a competition. Incidentally, that is not entirely without risk. Since 1907, when the first race was driven, 156 riders have already died.

You can also go to the island by car. To get there, there are different routes. The fastest way is to take the boat to Dover at the French Calais. From Dover you drive on to Liverpool, where you take the boat to Douglas, the capital of Isle of Man. In total, the trip to the island lasts around 14 hours.
