In four weeks, the Helmond police have issued nearly 56,000 euros in fines to people who were behind the wheel with their phone. According to the police, distraction is one of the most stubborn problems in traffic and one of the main causes of accidents.
The police checked extra for distraction in traffic between 19 May and and 15 June. A total of 79 motorists were fined, just like 17 truck drivers, 73 cyclists and two drivers of a moped. It yielded a total amount of 55,829 euros. The police also had a ‘strong conversation’ with them.
You are punishable if you participate in the traffic with a telephone in hand. Since 2019, this prohibition applies to every vehicle, including cyclists and mopeds. Hands -free calling is allowed if you do not jeopardize traffic. Cyclists who drive a telephone in hand pay 170 euros. For motorists that is 430 euros. Moped and moped cyclists pay 300 euros.
