NH reporter Paul Tromp, who previously a series with Westermann recorded About his collection of Olympic attributes, went looking for family members of Scheffer. The Haarlem weightlifter had no children, but it did have a brother. That line turned out to be crucial.

“On a web forum I found the name of one connie, from Australia. She asked a question about the life of her family member Guus Scheffer. Bingo, I thought. I sent her a message and it was waiting for an answer,” Paul explains. That waited for a while: a few years.

The ring is coming to Amsterdam

“Guus turned out to be Connie’s brother to be her grandfather. And she wrote that the family is in possession of his Olympic ring,” says Paul.

Her daughter Amanda happened to travel and made a stopover in Amsterdam. That’s how Paul and the wife of Maarten, Emilie, could view the ring. “Wonderful of course. A great find for myself, but all the way for the Westermann family. Maartens Speorocht got another nice turn. Unfortunately, he couldn’t experience it anymore.”
