Protected ranking tennis players if they let eggs freeze

6.21 pm: Tennis players who choose to undergo fertility treatment will receive a protected ranking during their absence. The WTA (tennis organization for women) announced this on Wednesday. Tennis players may play certain tournaments based on the ranking.

“The new rule means that players now no longer have to play professional tennis for fertility treatment, such as freezing eggs or embryos, and can safely return to the competition with a protected ranking,” said the WTA.

Players in the global top 750 who do not take action for at least ten weeks due to a procedure are eligible. The American Sloane Stephens, winner of the US Open in 2017, has already argued in favor of recognizing the freezing of ova as a protected ranking activity.
