The 56-year-old comes from the Saarland Elversberg to the Weser. According to media reports, Steffen signed a contract until 2028.
Werder Bremen found a successor to Ole Werner and officially confirmed this obligation on Thursday: Horst Steffen will lead the Bundesliga club as head coach in the coming season. According to media reports, he signed a contract for three years and Werder paid a transfer fee between 300,000 and 350,000 euros for him. Steffen will be officially presented next Monday.
Change of staff at the green-whites takes place only two days after Werner had been released by the association. In his part, Werner announced at the beginning of the week that he did not want to extend his contract in 2026.
Horst absolutely convinced us in terms of content and human. He has done outstanding work in Elversberg in the past seven years. Horst stands for offensive, attractive football and very good and clear team leadership. We are convinced to go into the new season with him.

Steffen stands for “offensive, attractive football”
Steffen narrowly missed the crowning glory of his success story at SV Elversberg last Monday. Since 2018 he had led the club from the regional league to third place in the 2nd Bundesliga. In the relegation to the Bundesliga, however, the Saarlanders failed at FC Heidenheim.
“Horst stands for offensive, attractive football and a very good and clear team leadership,” added managing director Clemens Fritz. He was convinced to “go into the new season well with Steffen.” Steffen is considered a sponsor of young players. He also looked after Nick Woltemade when he was loaned by the Bremern to Elversberg between 2022 and 2023. In the meantime, the Stuttgart attacker is said to be the focus of top international clubs.
“I quickly chose Werder”
The 56-year-old Steffen used to be a professional himself, played for Bayer Uerdingen, Borussia Mönchengladbach and the MSV Duisburg 207 Bundesliga and 75 second division games. Before Elversberg, Steffen had worked as head coach at Chemnitzer FC, the Stuttgart Kickers and Prussia Münster as well as in the young people from Borussia Mönchengladbach and the MSV Duisburg. The commitment to Werder is his first stop in the Bundesliga.
In the conversations, I was given a lot of appreciation by those responsible and showed what the club was up to in the next few years. This exchange was absolutely convincing and I quickly decided on Werder.
