With the second women’s team, VOC took the cup in a ‘controversial’ final. The Amsterdam handball players won 30-28 against Venlo. The first of VOC was eliminated earlier, but the second was still active in the cup tournament. That led to a lot of criticism in the handball world.

Trainer Elly An de Boer can’t do much with the criticism. “We follow the rules. I have a very young group with two or three players over the age of 23. Too bad it is such a discussion. If they start to change the rules, I will see it. Then I will keep it again,” De Boer responds.

Jill Kooij returns

The start of the young players of VOC was still bad. Venlo was still 18-13 at the break. For the Amsterdam youngsters things went better in the second half. It turned the score (21-20) and finally took the NHV cup. It is the second cup win in a row for the club from Amsterdam. Although that was last year with the first team.

Jill Kooij returned to VOC four months after she told two years ago that she was going to stop handball. “I am back. Now I am not going to say that I am stopping. There is a very young team and we have worked very hard. That’s why I am very happy,” says Kooij.

In total it is the seventh cup win for VOC, a record in Dutch women’s handball.

Adjustment rules

Mike van der Laarse, chairman of the Topsportplatform at the NHV (Dutch Handball Association) already spoke for the final about VOC 2. “We have to adjust the rule, because it is not entirely fair play,” says Van der Laarse.

The chairman says that the new rule will start in the coming season. The exact interpretation is not yet entirely clear, but there will probably be a maximum of two to three U-23 players from the first team with the second team in the cup tournament.
