Keeper Jarmo Myllys Remember to be the guarantor of the first World Championship gold won by the Lions in 1995.
Therefore, when asked for the most memorable match of his career, the answer may surprise you. The date was 18 February 1988.
– It was a tough game: against Canada, at the Olympics, Calgary, he recalls the setting.
Myllys played a match of her life, and Finland won Canada at her home ice with a score of 3-1.
It was an important step towards the Lions’ first medal, Olympic silver – especially when investments were settled without the playoffs based on the series.
– I probably had over 40 tackles. I also remember when we got the ice, Canada measured my mask. It made it another cool when the cross between the lattice was too big. Everybody played on the same mask and I don’t know what it was.
“They were able to play five against three, but did not score,” Myllys says Rahtunen deserved pride in his voice.

“Of course, the -95 finals have also come to mind,” he admits.
-Last year, the World Cup final was lost to Canada with a harsh. Then they were close, and it came afterwards. That summer was damn difficult and couldn’t sleep properly. It was fun to see if this place would ever get a place.
World Cup gold 1995
The place came right after the next season.
Myllys thanks the Lions for the preparation of the Swedish Games that began in the summer. Head coach Curt Lindström invested in the team’s spiritual side.
– “Curre” hit the goal that in Stockholm there was nothing more than the World Championship.

Myllys kept the Finnish goal clean in the quarterfinals of France and in the semi -finals against the Czech Republic.
– I had a good starting point, but we knew that Sweden at home in the finals would surely be strong.
– There was heavy pressures, but self -confidence was hard that this game we won by any means.
The iconic final numbers 4-1 do not tell the whole truth, as Tre Kronor did not sell his skin cheaply.
– They got hard and couldn’t get the game right. The importance of the first goal was big. It was a bit triggered by our playing, Myllys says the hat trick hero Ville Peltonen 1-0 hits.
Unsteady Bure
More than 20 years of gaming also had bitter disappointments.
In addition to spring 1994, the mill of the mill was annoyed by the Nagano Olympics semi -final against Russia in the winter of 1998.
“Russian Rocket” Pavel Bure scored five goals in Russia’s 7-4 victory, three of them, one overwhelming and one to empty goals.
– It was hard to play against it. It always came at a fast pace and was fast from his hands, Myllys remembers.
– Yes, I could hear it afterwards, but it’s a game and I didn’t take myself.
Rise to gold

Myllys moved from her breeding club from SaPKO to Ilves in 1983 and was able to celebrate the championship right after her second league season. Admittedly, his role was still quite small more experienced Jukka Tammi When taking the main responsibility between the posts.
– Many probably wondered when I went to lynx because there was already a national team watch. However, I took it through the positive, and Jukka was a good learner for me, Myllys thanks.
In the spring 1985 finals, Ilves switched to a young Savonlinna when TPS led the match with a 2-0 win.
-It was in the third game in Turku, and a gold jacket had already been made for the “Mölli”, Myllys remembers TPS pilot For Matti Keinonen Busy props.
Ilves, who had already fallen, got even more anger and crushed TPS 8-1, who filled the old hall to the Kupittaa Hall.
In the opening round of the four -game in the Hakamets, the mill stretched 20 times on the puck and did not allow any itching behind. Minute before the end of the final round Risto Jalo With his 3-2 goal, he hit the level of the series.
– Of course I thought it would be great to play a fifth match, but Hiitelän Seppo Said he put an oak in the finish-what was the right movement, Myllys times the Ilves coach’s solution.
– TPS became hard in Turku and pressed crazy, but “Taisto” played really well.
TPS led 2-0 until the injured Jalo returned to the game and continued his heroic acts by dipping the puck twice Jouni Rokaman behind.
The lynx won Game Fiven 3-2 and took the gold medals with a 3-2 win. The championship is still the latest in the club.
Masters together
Last March, Ilves invited his 40-year-old gold team to follow a playoff match against Tappara.
– We had a cure for us, and it was a good condolences. They watched the game and ate well. It was nice to see old gaming buddies, Myllys praises.
An even more legendary Finnish team gathered in connection with the World Cup when the first gold medal of the Lions’ first gold medal 30 years ago in Globen returned to a “crime scene”.
– It was a nicely organized event, and it was really great to see old gamers. A couple of days were together in Stockholm and saw Finland-Sweden, says Myllys.
Finally a medal
Myllys made his breakthrough at the top of Rauma in 1986-88.
– I would have liked to continue in Ilves, but both were needed for playing time and Tammi was a son of my own village. It was great that Lukko then contacted and offered the young boy a number one place. That departure for Rauma was the most right transfer of my career, says Myllys.
– I got along with the national team and came success.
In the spring of 1987, Myllys made his debut at the World Cup, and in total he represented Finland at 13 value races.
In February 1988, the Lions won their historic first medal, Calgary’s Olympic silver, Myllys with the main responsibility. He defeated 92.8 percentage in six matches.
-We already had a bronze medal, he recalls the setting before the last round of the Soviet match, to which head coach Pentti Matikainen switched to the paint oak.
-The contribution was that we would go to silver by victory over Sweden, and Taisto played a dream again, Myllys repeats Finland’s memorable 2-1 win.
Rainfall
Myllys rejects the shot of HIFK Iiro Järvi with Luke’s paint.
At the club level, the 1987-88 season was the dominance of Mylly.
– The lynx won the regular season, and the championship had to be patted for it, he remembers.
Keinonen had moved from Turku to Luke’s helm.
-In the regular season, we lost all the games against Ilves, and when we hit the semi-finals, Mölli told me if he could put you in the finish line, you have some Ilves-Kammo.
– I told Möll that I would give me another place, and then I won the lynx straight 3-0.
However, in the finals, Tappara was better. The lock was content with silver, but after the season, the mill cleaned the prize table.
In addition to the golden helmet of the season’s most valuable player, he received the Best Goalkeeper Ylönen Prize and was selected for the All-Star field.
Displacement
After the brilliant season, the Mill was invited by the Minnesota North Stars, but there were few European goalkeepers in the NHL at the time, and the mill did not succeed in the breakthrough.
He played a total of 39 NHL matches in Minnesota and San Jose Sharks in four seasons until he returned to Finland-unexpectedly to the KooKoo goal.
– It was the end of July, and all league gangs already had goalkeepers. I had to get a place to play somewhere.
KooKoo reached the league qualifier but failed to rise, and for the next season 1993-94 Myllys returned to Rauma. It was again a success and brought both the Olympic and SM bronze before the spring World Championship silver.
– Then I was in Luleå for seven years, Myllys summed up from 1994 to 2001, which raised her to the city.
New NHL offer
In Luleå, Myllys became a cult player and the first championship in club history. Vesa Parviainen
However, there was an opportunity that the mill did not catch on. The World Championship 1995 and the choice of the best goalkeeper of the Games, after the man’s first Luleå season, gave him a NHL offer again.
– I thought I had already seen the NHL and I wouldn’t be able to get farm games anymore if I had to go there. I liked to be in Luleå, but on the other hand, it was a bit annoying that it might have been worth sticking to it, he says of the Ottawa Senators offer.
In Elitserien, the Myllys’ merit list came in two championships (Luleå HF 1996 and HV71 2004) two goals scored – rare for goalkeepers.
Luleå has also frozen his game number 35.
– It was a big tribute. I think I was the first foreign player whose shirt is raised in Sweden to the ceiling.
New job

In the league, Myllys, who represented Blues and SaiPa, also moved to coaching after her game years. He worked as a goalkeeper or assistant coach in SaiPo, SaPKO and Hok, and in the Austrian Klagenfurt and Feldkirch.
Last summer Myllys started a new job as a greenkeeper.
– A little burn lost to coaching, he says.
Myllys works as a field manager at Kerimäki golf course.
– It makes everything from side to side. You can be outdoors, move around a lot and learn new things. I’m really comfortable, and I like the damn thing, he says.
– I’m playing golf on that side, but I’m not a good player.
