FC Augsburg ensured a real coup and committed Sandro Wagner as a new coach. The current assistant of national coach Julian Nagelsmann will be the successor to the Danes Jess Thorup. This was confirmed by the club of the German Press Agency. “Sky” and “Bild” also reported on the personnel. The trainer is to sign his contract on Wednesday, which is valid until summer 2028.
The Swabians had separated after a multi -day season analysis by Thorup and sports director Marinko Jurendic. There had been rumors about Wagner’s commitment for some time. He announced at the end of April to leave the German Football Association after the final Four of the Nations League from June 4th to June 8th. He said: “I would like to take the next step soon. It is no secret that it is my big wish to work as a head coach at some point. With the start of my football teacher training in January, this has become increasingly clear to me.”
Before this season, Augsburg’s managing director Michael Ströll had expressed the desire to finally take the image of the gray mouse in its 14th Bundesliga season. But as in the season 2023/24, when five defeats in the final spurt cost an international starting place, FC Augsburg also collapsed now. After four defeats in a row, the team ended the season as a twelfth in the table.
Wagner successfully trained the SpVgg Unterhaching for two years, which he left after promotion to the 3. League 2023. Since September of the same year he has been with Benjamin Glück assistant coach from Nagelsmann. Previously, he had been the co-coach of the U 20 national team and had already completed an A-international game under the then interim team leader Rudi Völler together with head coach Hannes Wolf.
