THEIn science it speaks clearly: there is no type of alcohol that does well to health. Alcohol is alcohol, regardless of whether they are red wine, clear beer or transparent spirits. Each type of alcoholic drink contains ethanol, a substance that our body transforms into acetaldehyde, toxic compound which can damage DNA and increase the risk of developing different different forms of cancer. But then it makes sense to ask: if we really want to toast, is there a way to drink consciously?
Strategies to limit risks (and hangover)
Experts interpeered from the New York Times They suggest some practical strategies to reduce exposure against alcohol, without having to renounce a glass in company completely. Choosing the lowest alcoholic gradation drinks is the first advice. Between a 4% beer and one at 8%, better the first. And in general, as is known, beer contains less ethanol than wine, and the wine less than the liqueurs. However, there are exceptions.
EYE, then, to the quantity. A 33 cl beer with an alcoholic gradation of 5% contains on average the same amount of ethanol as a glass of wine from 150 ml to 12% or of a 45 ml shot of 40% liqueur. Beware of cocktails: The mixtures are difficult to evaluate, often contain more than a type of alcohol and are stretched with very sugary juices or drinks. The advice is to prefer wine or beer when you really want to know how much you are drinking. Finally, better Avoid the combination with caffeine. The drinks such as Espresso Martini, Vodka Red Bull, or a simple correct coffee, can deceive the perception of drunkenness, pushing to drink more. The exciting effect of caffeine masks the sedative alcohol, increasing the risks.
Clear or dark? It is not just a matter of taste
The metropolitan legend according to which clear highlColicals (such as vodka or gin) would be less harmful than the dark ones (such as rum or bourbon) is only partially true. From the point of view of long -term health, nothing changes: both contain ethanol. However, dark drinks tend to contain more congenerysubstances derived from the fermentation that give flavor and color, but also more intense postumi. That’s why Brandy, whiskey or rum can cause heavier hangover than gin or vodka. But here too there are exceptions: some clear tequilas, for example, may contain high levels of congenery.
Drink consciously, but without illusions
The truth, as reiterated also by the epidemiologists of Columbia University and the Center for Addiction and Mental Health, is that Each dose of alcohol has an impact on our body. There are no “healthy” choices, but there are choices more aware. Knowing what you are drinking, limiting the quantity and preferring low gradation options is already a good start. For the rest, as every expert would repeat: moderation is not only a virtue, but a real form of prevention.
