For the third time, the USA is allowed to call itself ice hockey world champions. The decision in an exciting final was only made in extra time on Sunday (May 25, 2025) against Switzerland.
Days Thompson scored in the globe in Stockholm after 2:02 minutes of extension to 1-0 victory for the USA, which are world champions for the third time after 1933 and 1960. Switzerland also lost in its fourth final participation and, as in 2024, had to be content with silver. The actually outstanding Swiss goalkeeper Leonardo Genoni set up a new World Cup record with 243 minutes without conceding and was named player of the tournament.
Bronze had previously secured Sweden in the host duel with Denmark in the afternoon.
USA with a better start
In a very intensive game, the Americans had the better start. With a lot of pressure on the Swiss construction game, the United States, which had lost the duel in the group phase with 0: 3, left the Confederated hardly any space. So the first big chance went to the USA. Drew O’Connor had a free shot on a pass from Brady Skjei. But the strong Swiss goalie Genoni was on the post for the first time.
The Swiss aggressively came into its own in an overpayment situation, but remained without a punch. So it remained at 11:11 goal shots on the scoreboard after the first third at 0-0.
Swiss goalkeeper Genoni parried Penalty
Even in the middle third, the US team made the fresher and overall stronger impression. After a counterattack by Frank Nazar, the Americans were awarded a penalty. Thompson sets the hit for the USA
The decision had to be made in the three-against-three. After 53 seconds Denis Malgin had the first chance of shooting for Switzerland. The puck crashed over the crossbar from Swayman’s fishing glove. A little later the time had come: Thompson drove forward over half-right and, with a precise shot into the left lower corner, stipulated the puck to the golden World Cup hit over the line.
This ends a long thirst for the United States. The Americans had won their last regular World Cup title in 1933. In 1960 they were led as the world champion as the Olympic champion because there was no tournament.
