On August 29, 1994, the legendary Oasis debut was Definitely Maybe. Here are a few fun facts about his artwork, which you can also score at the next Britpop regulars’ table. But first here the cover as a reminder:

The inspiration

Where else should she come from? Originally, Oasis wanted to lean on the artwork of the compilation of the compilation a Collection of Beatles Oldies from 1966. There you can see the Fab Four at a table in a Japanese hotel room. Oasis wanted to shoot a similar group picture in the living room of her rhythm guitarist Bonhead. However, when the photographer Michael Spencer Jones saw the room, it quickly became clear that you had to rethink due to the narrow of the room and work with unusual perspectives. Art Director Brian Cannon also wanted to accommodate many objects on the cover. He was based on Flemish Renaissance artists such as Jan van Eyck, who wanted to tell a story in a picture with the strategic placement of objects.

The guitar

… is an epiphone EJ-200. Noel Gallagher wrote the majority of (what’s the story) Morning Glory on her?. It can be heard most clearly in the intro of “Wonderwall”.

Burt-Bacharach-Poster

With this, Noel wanted to pay tribute to one of his great idols. In his autobiography “The Truth about Oasis”, original drummer Tony McCarroll remembers how Gallagher’s buddy and Oasis producer Mark Coyle Bacharachs “This Guy’s in Love With You” brought to the band camp, which in Gallagher triggered an obsession for the US singer/songwriter. Later Gallagher should take the song as a model for the B-side “Half The World Away”. McCarroll: “[Noel] Try us something about a new song, took the clamps on hand and started it. It was ‘Half the World Away’, and I had to laugh because I had suggested to take over the shuffle rhythm of Burt Bacharach’s ‘This Guy’s in Love with you’. Noel seemed to have copied the whole song and simply renamed. ” The placement of the poster on the cover picture was interpreted as a tribute to Pink Floyd, which put the soundtrack for the musical film “Gigi” in a similar position of her umbagmum.

The cigarettes

… are from the “Benson & Hedges” brand. The Gallaghers liked to smoke their tips so much that they had two boxing sets with the collected singles designed from their first two albums after the design of the packaging.

The pose

“The room itself was very barren,” says photographer Michael Spencer Jones. “I found, if at all, only the window interesting. So I kept it right there. In order not only to see shadows from the band, I had to shed light on the room. And to make it appear larger, I used a wide -angle lens. Together that the floorboards – Bonehead himself worked (Bonhead worked in front of Oasis as a painter and decorator; A week before the shoot I was in the Egyptian department of the Manchester science museum and saw all these preserved kings.

The inflatable globe

… stands for the planned world conquest, clear. But is also a reminiscence of the big role models and Manchester City colleagues of the Stone Roses, who liked to play on stage with such a balloon.

THE TV

… shows a scene from Noel’s favorite film, Sergio Leone’s spaghetti western “Two glorious Halunken” from 1966.

The one footballer

… is Rodney Marsh. The English football legend played from 1972 to 1975 at Manchester City, the Association of Choice of the Gallagher Gebrüder. At the time, Marsh was one of the club’s big crowd favorites.

The other footballer

… is George Best. An even bigger legend than Marsh. But played false club with the Gallagher, Manchester United. However, Bonhead liked it, which is why the best is shown here as a small concession. However, significantly smaller than the city player.

The red wine

…, As an allusion to “Cigarettes & Alcohol” next to the fluff, is none. But a soft drink based on black currants called “Ribena”, which came to the English market in 1938 and has been very popular there since then. According to photographers, the red wine should not look like red wine.

What all this is supposed to

Noel wanted the best band in the world (Oasis), the best songwriter (Bacharach), the best football player (Best – Ha!), The Best Film (“Two Glorious Halzen”) and the best football club (Man City) combine in one picture.
