THE‘International Booker Prize was awarded last night, in a ceremony held at the Tate Modern Gallery in London, to the collection of stories Heart Lamp of the Indian Banu Mushtaq. The book of the 77 -year -old writer, lawyer and activist of human rights, was translated into English by Kannada, the language of the southern Indian state of the Karnataka, by Deepa Bhasthi, to whom he goes half of the prize, 50 thousand pounds.

It is the first time that a book written in Kannada has received international recognition. The twelve stories of Heart Lampwhich describe with subtlety and irony the daily battle of women and girls of the Muslim communities of south of India, fighting against male domain, caste impositions, religious conservatism, have been defined by the jury “a surprising portrait of strength and resistance capacity”.
