The MT Melsungen also presents itself against HSG Wetzlar in very good shape and remains a hot candidate for the championship.
Anyone looking forward to an exciting handball hessenderby on Monday evening was bitterly disappointed. The MT Melsungen, who competed in the unusual North Hesse Arena for the second time, was so superior to the temporarily pitiful guests of HSG Wetzlar that everything had already been decided at the latest at the latest. With 20:10 we went into the break, in the end it was 33:27 from the point of view of the MT.
Melsungen dominates at will
The Melsungers, who continue to be in second place in the Bundesliga table with leaders Berlin, took exactly three minutes to get into the game. Then there was no stopping. The Spaniard Ian Barrufet, who will leave the MT after this season, hit the Wetzlar goal reliably, regularly and eight times. Spielmacher Erik Balenciaga delighted the audience with magic anti-playing. And if the HSG broke through, the outstanding goalkeeper Adam Morawski was on the spot.
Significantly in the first round: Even from a two-minute time penalty in the initial phase against Adrian Sipos, the MT did not let herself out of the concept and certainly not. The Bartenwetzers also expanded the lead in outnumbered and demonstrated early: there is nothing to get here.
MT takes out pressure after the break
In the second half, the Melsungers then noticeably put pressure out and also had to survive a fright. Balenciaga slammed onto the back of the head after a foul and had to be stunned from the field. The little Spaniard sat on the bench with a thick ice cream bag for a few minutes and saw two teams with completely different destinations. In the second game under the new coach Momir Ilic, Wetzlar tried to take a tolerable result, the MT switched something into the torment in view of the upcoming tasks.
And that with good reason. Historical is waiting for the MT Melsungen in the coming weeks: At the weekend, the North Hesse will compete in the final Four of the European League in Hamburg and fight for the first title in the club’s history. A few days later it goes to the direct duel with the Bundesliga leader to the Berlin Foxes (May 29).
Lights can also play along
At least there are still remarkable things to report on the final phase: The 44-year-old world and European champion Carsten Lichtlein was substituted almost ten minutes before the end with the cheering of the Melsung fans and showed his skills at a very strong parade. The 19-year-old Jonas Riecke scored his first Bundesliga goal in front. Age difference of the MT duo: 25 years.
