A prestige project by Tesla seems to disappear in the sinking – investors and pre -orderers are increasingly asking themselves: Will the Tesla Roadster ever become a reality?
• Tesla does not comply with promises to customers
• promised roadsters were never delivered
• Future of the model uncertain
As Tesla CEO Elon Musk In 2017, the public presented the New Tesla Roadster, the enthusiasm was great. The announced performance data looked like the future: 1,000 kilometers of range, from 0 to 100 km/h in less than two seconds and a futuristic design. The market launch was announced for 2020 – an ambitious goal that has now shifted several times.
Despite the announcements, the Tesla Roadster is not yet on the market five years later. Many investors and Tesla fans are now wondering whether this vehicle is still being built.
Tesla Roadster: Many open promises – always new delays
In 2021, Elon Musk announced that the technical development of the roadster was soon completed: “Exclusion of the technical development this year, start of production next year. The aim is to have a mobile release candidate design in late summer. The three-engine drive system and the advanced battery technology were important prerequisites”.
Three years later, in July 2024, he said as part of the presentation of the results for the second quarter: “With a view to the Roadster, we have completed the most technology. There are still some improvements that we want to make, but we expect to start production of the Roadster next year. It will be something special”.
But Musk relativized this statement in October 2024. There was no clear confirmation for the production of production in 2025. Instead, he only called the roadster during a question and answer round on the Q3 results only “the cherry on the cake on the cake”-a comment that raised more questions from many observers than answered.
Elon Musk’s emptiness promise: future of the roadster uncertain
A central problem according to the news page Electrek: Tesla has accepted thousands of reservations for the roadster – at prices between $ 50,000 and $ 250,000 each. In addition, there is a large-scale recommendation program in which loyal Tesla customers were rewarded with the view of a free roadster. According to Electrek, Tesla owes around 80 of these vehicles and considerable discounts on a further hundred.
So far, however, Tesla has not delivered a single roadster. Electrek suspects that the project would start with a loss of around $ 100 million – a possible explanation for the delay.
Another sign that the roadster could be far from the production manufacture, according to Electrek, may be found in Tesla’s own financial reports. In the result report for the first quarter of 2025, the status of the roadster was officially changed from “in development” to “design development”. It remains unclear whether this is actually a step backwards. One thing is certain: There is still no question of construction or the start of production.
Tesla Roadster: A myth on four wheels?
In view of the unclear communication, the years of delays and the outstanding fulfillment of concrete promises, the Tesla Roadster is increasingly promising to symbolize the symbol. For investors, pre -orders and industry observers, the question remains: Will the Tesla Roadster ever become a reality – or was it just a clever marketing tool from the start?
