Vandaele was chairman of the Flemish Parliament for several months in 2019, and is therefore the only West Flemish to held that position. He is praised for his file knowledge, quiet style and broad appreciation over party boundaries.
After his short chairmanship, he was the party leader of the N-VA in the Flemish Parliament for five years. Vandaele has had a long political career, including as a senator, provincial councilor, and since 2018 as mayor of De Haan.
The title of honorary chairman does not include any financial benefits.
