No chance that temple can stay

In May 2026, the 12-year lease of the association behind the temple with the municipality ends. The association had hoped to be able to buy the land afterwards – something that they say they were promised orally. The believers have jointly raised an amount that should be possible. Now it appears that only an illusion.

A municipality cannot commit land to one party, Alderman Nevin explains. “There is the Didam judgment, which stipulates that municipalities are not allowed to make mutual agreements about land sales, but are obliged to offer equal opportunities to all market parties. They are therefore not entitled to first purchase.”

“In addition, that would not change the situation,” she emphasizes. “The building is outdated. From the start it has clearly communicated that it was a temporary rent. They really have to take steps. I am willing to think about a move, but they have to look for a new location themselves.”
