The fact that the province is against the arrival of F-35s at Eelde has not been hidden in the past period. “We are really a fierce opponent,” says Turenhout. In addition, she again points to the ‘no-go’ that the province has made known to the minister.
In the recreation sector there is also a sigh of lighting today. “We are relieved,” says Marlies Mellema from Onnen, who represents a group of around fifty recreation entrepreneurs from Northern Drenthe and Groningen. “It remains to be seen for the final decision, but we had hoped for this outcome.”
The recreation sector in the Eelde area was very concerned about the arrival of F-35s. Entrepreneurs fear that the noise of the combat aircraft would disturb the quiet character of the area. Mellema: “It would be unacceptable if F-35s were to come here. People come here for the space and peace.”
Jan Wittenberg van Vole thinks it is special that citizens could send such a clear signal to politics and defense. “The conclusion is: citizen, keep courage. If you put the common interest first and do it together, much can be achieved. This area here is far too good.”
“We’re going to see if we can raise the glass with everyone who participated in the campaign with everyone who participated in the campaign,” concludes Wittenberg.
