The 100 best singers of all time, 32th place: Bono
By Billie Joe Armstrong (Green Day)
I would describe bonos singing as 50 percent Guinness, ten percent cigarettes – and the rest is religion. He is a body-emphasized singer, like the leader of a gospel choir who loses the music of the moment. Bono then goes to a place that is outside of himself, especially in front of an audience and when he sings these high tones. His strength comes from it, that is the pure, genuine bono. Of course, he believes in the things he talks about, global economy or AIDS aid in Africa, but this voice is always the top priority, where his truthful beliefs are.
He has so many role models. You hear Joe Strummer, Bob MarleyOtis Redding, Elvis Presley, even John Lennon. And he has the same voice as Robert plans. The first tones of “Sunday Bloody Sunday” are the sheer madness. But the Irish singing boy has everything under control. “The Joshua Tree” shows how masterfully Bono has mastered his voice and what he learned from punk, new wave and American musicians like Bob Dylan. In the quiet moments of “With Or Without You” you can imagine how he sits under the star tent. And when he starts the chorus, a hailstorm breaks off.
The 100 best singers of all time, 32th place: Bono
Much of Bonos unconventional vocals has to do with the band’s rhythms and the church bell feeling from Edges guitar. Bono surfs very elegantly, even if it looks very natural. And he is not afraid to go to his limits, like the falsetting singing in “Lemon” or “Kite”. You never have the feeling that he manipulates his voice to knock on the plaster.
You never have the feeling that he manipulates his voice to knock on the plaster. Bono is always looking for ways to make something new and different. This is something I learned from him: never rest on your laurels. Listen to, learn. That is what makes a singer – and Bono has it in excess. ”
Birthday: May 10, 1960. The most important songs: “One”, “With or Without You”, “Where the Streets have no name”. Inspiration for: Eddie Vedder, Chris Martin.
