Leipzig clearly lags behind expectations this season. Even the European part name is insecure. The manager wants to react drastically.
The goalless draw at Werder Bremen has far -reaching consequences for RB Leipzig. For the first time in seven years, the club missed participation in the Champions League. Even general participation in the European Cup seems difficult. Up to 60 million euros in income could be omitted. For manager Marcel Schäfer it is clear: a lot will have to change in the squad.
“If you consider that it was all about everything, then you have seen what we are missing again,” said Schäfer after the 0-0 on Saturday. In his view, the performance was a reflection of the entire season. It is a confirmation of the considerations that have already been employed internally. RB is currently not playing football that is needed to participate in the “premier class”.
Schäfer made it clear: The current squad no longer fits a Leipzig playing style. “We will have to change more than we thought before the season because we missed too often what we need to do justice to our ambitions,” said the manager.
According to the “picture”, numerous professionals should no longer fit into the club’s requirement profile. There is a lack of pressing strength, pace football, development potential and leadership qualities. In addition, there are no more sporting development in several players – some would no longer bring the level to keep up with the top of the table.
For Schäfer, this probably means a comprehensive reorganization. He described the upcoming conversion as a “ordinary challenge – sporty and economically”. At the same time, he sees this: “We are now changing the things that we have already seen anyway. We are going to go on with all the consequence and try to implement everything.”
Leipzig also relies on open discussions with the players. Schäfer emphasized: “Almost all players have ongoing contracts that have to be respected. Nevertheless, we will have very honest conversations to explain our thoughts. We will try to make the changes.”
